Chapter 17 – Capítulo 17

Jesus and the twelve worked with the fishermen and on ships bringing goods from all parts of the world, even from the cities beyond. And during this time, He did not draw attention to Himself.

Jesús y los doce trabajaban con los pescadores y en los barcos traían cosas buenas  de todas partes del mundo, incluso de las ciudades lejanas. Y durante este tiempo, Él no ponía atención a Sí mismo.

Then one day, while in the part of Tyre called “The Place of Purple,” He came upon two men in argument among several others. He said to them, “No disagreement can be settled justly by blows, while loud words confuse the issue. If your brother does wrong, reprove him quietly, but let it be between you two alone. If the matter cannot be settled between you, then seek two men acceptable to both, and let them decide the issue.”

Entonces un día, pasando a la parte de Tyre llamada “El lugar de la Púrpura” Él encontró a dos hombres discutiendo contra muchos otros. Él les dijo, “Ningún desacuerdo puede ser aclarado con golpes, mientras las palabras ruidosas confunden en problema. Si vuestro hermano hace algo mal, regañadle tranquilamente, pero resolverlo entre vosotros dos sólo. Si el asunto no puede ser aclarado entre vosotros, entonces buscad dos hombres aceptables para ambos, y dejad que ellos resuelvan el problema.

By the time Jesus had dealt with this matter, a crowd had gathered, and someone in it called out, “Sire, come with me to my brother, and tell him that the estate left by our father should be shared with me.”

Como por aquel tiempo Jesús había hablado sobre este tema, se había reunido una multitud, y alguno de ellos dijo, “Señor, ven conmigo a ver a mi hermano, y dile que el título dejado por nuestro padre debería recaer en mí”

Jesus called him forward and said, “I am a Teacher. No man has given Me authority to decide such matters. When things are done properly, there is less likelihood of repercussions.”

Jesús le habló y le dijo, “Yo soy un Maestro. Nadie Me ha dado autoridad para decidir tales cuestiones. Cuando las cosas se hacen correctamente, hay menos probabilidad de repercusiones”

Then Jesus turned to the gathering and said, “Take care always to guard against all kinds of greed and acquisitiveness, for no man’s happiness can be assured by his possessions. In fact, much wealth is the father of sleepless nights.

Entonces Jesús se volvió a los reunidos y dijo, “ Procurad siempre guardaros contra toda clase de avaricia y codicia, porque ninguna felicidad del hombre puede ser asegurada por sus posesiones. De hecho, la mucha riqueza es el padre de noches desveladas.

“There was a certain rich man whose fields were fertile, yielding heavy crops. Seeing the bounty of the land, he decided there was insufficient space to store it and had his barns and storehouses pulled down so bigger ones could be erected. Into these he stacked everything until the new buildings were packed full. When this was completed, he relaxed, saying to himself, ‘Now I have ample laid up for all my future needs and can eat, drink and enjoy my good fortune.’ But that night he was called to his accounting in another life, and no part of his worldly goods could be taken. Now, who benefited by all he had accumulated? This is how it is with those who accumulate worldly wealth but remain spiritual paupers.”

Había una vez cierto hombre rico cuyos campos era fértiles, produciendo buen maíz. Viendo la bondad de la tierra, decidió que no había suficiente espacio para almacenarlo y derribó sus graneros y almacenes para construir el más grande que se pudiera. En él amontonó todo hasta que estuvo totalmente lleno. Cuando estuvo completo, se relajó pensando para sí mismo,’Tengo acumulado bastante para todas mis futuras necesidades y puedo comer, beber y disfrutar de mi buena suerte’. Pero aquella noche fue llamado a su dar cuentas en la otra vida y no pudo coger ninguno de sus bienes terrenales. Bien, quién se benefició de lo que él había acumulado? Esto es lo que pasa con los que acumulan riquezas mundanas pero permanecen pobres de espíritu.”

Jesus then turned to two of the twelve who stood beside Him and said, “This is why I tell you not to unduly concern yourselves with food and clothing. There is so much more to life than eating, and the body requires more than clothes. Look at the wild birds, which live happily from day to day, and learn from them. Have no doubts, My friends, for you are certainly heirs to glory, with an unassailable treasurehouse in Heaven.

Entonces Jesús se volvió a dos de los doce que permanecían junto a él y dijo, “ Esto es por lo que os digo que no os preocupéis excesivamente de la comida o los vestidos. Hay muchas cosas para vivir que comer, y el cuerpo requiere más que vestiduras. Mirad los pájaros del campo, que viven alegremente día a día, y aprended de ellos. No dudéis, amigos Míos, porque con certeza seréis herederos de la gloria, con un inalcanzable almacén de tesoros en los Cielos.

“Be prepared for whatever comes, your clothes fitting the occasion and your lamp lit, like servants awaiting the master’s return from visiting, ready to open the door immediately. The master is gratified on finding his servants anticipating his arrival, and does not fail to reward them. Thieves keep clear of houses where the owners have made provision for their coming, but go in search of those unguarded or where the occupants sleep. Therefore, always hold yourself in readiness, for you never know from day to day what will eventuate.”

“Estad preparados para cualquier cosa que venga, vuestros vestidos apropiados para la ocasión y vuestra lámpara encendida. El dueño está satisfecho al encontrar a sus servidores anticipándose a su llegada, y no deja de recompensarles. Los ladrones pasan de largo de las casas dónde los dueños han tomado medidas para su llegada, pero buscan las desprotegidas y cuando sus ocupantes duermen. Por lo tanto, conservaos siempre en buena disposición, porque nunca sabréis de un día a otro lo qué ocurrirá.”

Peter said, “Sire, is this meant for us, or does it apply to everyone?”

Pedro dijo, “Señor, esto es importante para nosotros, o se ha de aplicar a todos’”

Jesus answered, “Who does the master choose to fill a position of trust? Is it not the man who works diligently though not under the eye of the master? I can assure you this is the man who will be promoted. If, however, the man in whom trust is vested thinks, ‘I am not being observed by the master,’ and gets drunk, or is careless about what is done, be sure the master will catch him out.

Jesús respondió, “ A quién debe un maestro elegir para ocupar una posición de confianza? No es al hombre que trabaja diligentemente aunque no esté a la vista del maestro? Yo os digo que éste es el hombre que ha de ser promovido. Si, de algún modo, el hombre en quien se deposita la confianza piensa, ‘no soy observado por el dueño’, y se va a emborrachar, o no es cuidadoso con lo que hace, estad seguros de que el dueño lo expulsará.

“Any servant who knows what to do but fails to do it should not go unchastised; but those who do not know what is expected of them cannot be justly criticized. From the man who is given much responsibility, much will be expected; for the greater the trust placed in a man, the greater should be the return.”

A man in the crowd said to Jesus, “We have heard of Your teachings and that You herald the Rule of God. Tell us about this.”

Ningún servidor que sabe lo que debe hacer pero falla en hacerlo, debe quedar sin castigo; pero los que no saben lo que se espera de ellos no pueden ser criticados justamente. Del hombre al que se han dado muchas responsabilidad, mucho se esperará; porque cuanta más confianza colocada en un hombre, más retornará”.

Un hombre entre la muchedumbre dijo a Jesús, “Hemos oído acerca de Tus enseñanzas y que Tú anuncias el Ley de Dios. Háblanos de ello”.

Jesus said, “There is the Kingdom of the Spirit and the kingdom of the flesh. God rules the first Himself, but the second He rules through His viceroy - man. But man tries to set himself up as an independent ruler, making his own laws and setting aside those of his Sovereign. When the viceroy ceases to rebel and governs in accord with the decrees of the Sovereign, that will be the Rule of God.”

Jesús dijo, “Existe el Reino del Espíritu y el reino de la carne. Dios gobierna el primero por Sí Mismo, pero el segundo Él lo gobierna a través de Su virrey-hombre. Pero el hombre intenta elevarse a sí mismo como un guía independiente, haciendo sus propias leyes y sustituyendo las de su Soberano. Cuando el virrey destituye al rebelde y gobierna de acuerdo a los decretos del Soberano, eso será la Ley de Dios”.

The man said, “This teaching is beyond our understanding. We have the law which comes from the mouthpieces of God.”

El hombre dijo, “Estas enseñanzas están más allá de nuestro entendimiento. Nosotros tenemos la ley que viene de los portavoces de Dios”.

Jesus said, “Of course you have the law, but it is either disobeyed, ignored or circumvented. Therefore, it is nullified and rendered ineffective.

Jesús dijo, “Por supuesto que vosotros tenéis la ley, pero está toda desobedecida, ignorada o tergiversada. Por lo tanto está vacía y se presenta inefectiva.

“I have come to gather the lost sheep, bringing them back into the fold, which is the will of God. I have come to cleanse the Earth with purifying fire. But though I have struck the sparks, the tinder is not yet ignited. I travel a stony road, but the greatest ordeal lies ahead.

Yo he venido a juntar las perdidas ovejas, haciéndolas volver al aprisco, que es la voluntad de Dios. He venido a limpiar la Tierra con el fuego purificador. Pero aunque yo he encendido la chispa, la yesca no está todavía encendida. Yo viajo por un camino pedregoso, pero la mayor experiencia me espera más adelante.

“You may think in your hearts that I come to bring peace to the Earth and concord among men, and this is true, for such will be under the Rule of God. However, before this comes about, those who oppose it must be defeated. Therefore, I come to arm those who are loyal to the cause, to put a sword into the hands of men and stinging words on the tongues of women. Henceforth, families will be divided against themselves, and brother will be separated from brother, and father set against son.”

“Vosotros podéis pensar en vuestros corazones que yo vengo a traer paz a la Tierra y concordia entre los hombres, y esto es verdad, porque así debe ser bajo el Ley de Dios. Sin embargo. antes de que esto llegue, los que se oponen a esto han de ser derrotados. Por lo tanto, Yo vengo a armar a los que son leales a la causa, a poner una espada en las manos de los hombres y palabras punzantes en las lenguas de las mujeres. De aquí en adelante, las familias se dividirán contra sí mismas,y el hermano será separado del hermano, y el padre se colocará contra el hijo”

Some in the crowd said among themselves, “These words we can understand. Truly This is the One promised Who will deliver us from our oppressors.” Jesus said, “Bide your time, and all things will be made clear.”

Algunos entre la muchedumbre decían entre ellos, “Estas palabras podemos entenderlas. En verdad Éste es El prometido que nos librará de nuestros opresores”. Jesús dijo, “Daos tiempo, y estas cosas se aclararán”.

A scribe in the crowd said, “It seems You speak with hidden meanings. How are we to interpret these teachings?”

Un escriba entre la multitud dijo, “Parece que hablas con significados ocultos. Cómo haremos para interpretar estas enseñanzas”

Jesus said, “You are so accustomed to devious thinking, trying to make a ‘yes’ into a ‘no’ to suit your convenience, that when given Truth you pull it apart, seeking to find something else behind it. Unless you accept these things as would a child, you cannot hope to enter the Kingdom of God.

Jesús dijo, “Estáis tan acostumbrados a los pensamiento tortuosos, tratado de poner un ‘sí’ en lugar de un ‘no’ para seguir vuestra conveniencias, que cuando se os dice la Verdad la rechazáis, buscando encontrar algo tras ella. A no ser que aceptéis estas cosas como si fuérais niños, no podéis esperar entrar en el Reino de Dios.

“When you see clouds coming in from the West, you say, ‘Soon there will be rain,’ and this forecast proves to be correct. When the South wind blows, you say, ‘It will be extremely hot,’ and again your prediction is right. What hypocrites you are, so quick to interpret some signs while closing your eyes to others less to your liking. You can interpret the omens in Earth and sky, but close your eyes to those indicating present trends.”

Cuando veis las nubes acercándose por el Oeste, decís, “ Pronto lloverá” y este pronóstico demuestra ser correcto. Cuando sopla en viento del Sur, decís, “Va a hacer un calor extremo”, y otra vez vuestra predicción es correcta. Tan hipócritas sois, que interpretáis rápidamente algunas señales mientras cerráis vuestros ojos a otras que no son de vuestro gusto. Podéis interpretar los presagios en la Tierra y el cielo, pero cerráis los ojos a los que indican una tendencia presente.

Someone in the crowd said, “We have the failings of men. Should we be condemned for these?”

Alguien entre el público dijo, “Tenemos los fallos de los hombres. Debemos ser condenados por ello?”

Jesus replied, “As sons of God, you inherit His substance and are heirs to glory. Think less of earthly weaknesses and more of godly strength.”

Another in the crowd asked Jesus about unjustified suffering, and might not His cause bring this upon the heads of His followers? Someone else said, “What about the Galileans who died in resisting the efforts of Pilate to appropriate the Temple offerings so he could bring water to the city of Jerusalem?”

Jesús contestó, “Como hijos de Dios, heredáis Su sustancias y sois herederos de la gloria. Piensa menos en las debilidades terrestres y más en la fuerza de la bondad”.

Otro entre la multitud preguntó acerca de los sufrimientos injustificados y si no podría Su causa atraerlos sobre las cabezas de sus seguidores? Algún otro dijo, “¿Qué pasa con los Galileos que murieron resistiendo el intento de Pilatos de apropiarse del Templo ofreciendo que traería agua a la ciudad de Jerusalén?

Jesus said, “The Galileans and the Governor did right in their own eyes, the former seeking to serve God, and the latter, men. But these things are not matters to be placed at issue, for whoever serves one serves the other, and there is no clash of interests. Can you believe that the Galileans who suffered as they did were worse than others in Galilee? This is not so; they suffered for no wrongdoing, but through misguidance.

Jesús dijo, “Los Galileos y el Gobernador hicieron bien a sus propios ojos, lo primero sirviendo a Dios, y después, a los hombres. Pero estas cosas no son asuntos para plantearlos como un problema, porque cualquiera que sirve a uno sirve a otro y no hay conflicto de intereses. Acaso creéis que los Galileos que sufrieron como lo hicieron eran peores que otros en Galilea? No es así; Ellos sufrieron para no obrar mal, pero por un mal consejo.

“Calamity strikes capriciously. Do you think those who died when the tower fell on them at Siloam deserved death more than the others? Life is full of uncertainties, so men must be made aware of the need for repentance, knowing the day of assessment may be near or far. Be sure of one thing: There will be no discrimination among you on the assessment day; all will get their fitting reward.”

“La calamidad golpea de forma caprichosa. Acaso creéis que los que murieron cuando la torre cayó sobre ellos en Siloam merecían la muerte más que lo otros? La vida está llena de incertidumbre, por lo que los hombres deben ser conscientes de la necesidad del arrepentimiento, sabiendo que el día del juicio puede estar cerca o lejos. Estad seguros de una cosa: No habrá discriminación entre vosotros el día del juicio; todos recibirán su apropiada recompensa”.

Then one in the crowd shouted, “Tell us about the Kingdom of Heaven, for surely if we are going there, it is well to know what it is like.”

Entonces, uno entre la multitud gritó, “Háblanos del Reino de los Cielos, porque seguramente si hemos venido hasta aquí, es para saber a qué se parece”

Jesus said, “If you were going to a distant city, which would be most beneficial - a description of it, or details concerning the route? Then too, is it not important to prepare for your reception? For if a man residing in a palace describe the place, this serves no purpose to one who will have to beg for scraps and sleep in the gutters.

Jesús dijo, “Si tuvierais que ir a una ciudad distante, qué os sería más beneficioso -una descripción de ella o los detalles concernientes al camino? Y además, no es importante prepararse para vuestro recibimiento? Porque si un hombre que vive en un palacio describe el lugar, esto no tiene sentido para el que tenga que suplicar los desperdicios y dormir en los arroyos.

“The road to Heaven may be likened to ten young women who, taking lamps, went out to meet a bridegroom - five being irresponsible, and five reliable by nature. The irresponsible ones left everything to the last minute and snatched up their lamps forgetting the oil containers were not filled. Because the bridegroom was delayed, all the young women lay down to sleep. But at midnight there was a shout to say the bridegroom was coming and to go out and meet him.

“El camino a los Cielos puede ser comparado a diez jóvenes que, cogiendo una lámpara, salen a recibir a un novio -siendo cinco irresponsables y cinco formales por naturaleza. Las irresponsables dejan todo para el último minuto y cogerán su lámpara olvidando que el depósito de aceite no está completo. Como el novio se retrasa, todas las jóvenes se marchan a dormir. Pero a media noche se oye un grito para avisar de que el novio está llegando y salen y le reciben.

“The young women all arose and trimmed their lamps, but the irresponsible ones, finding theirs going out, said to the others, ‘Let us have some of your oil, for we forgot to fill the containers.’ The others replied, ‘We cannot do this, for we do not have enough oil for all. And if we share with you, there will be insufficient to light the way. It is better we provide light all the way with five lamps than we all provide light for just a short distance.’

“Todas las jóvenes se levantaron y cogieron sus preparadas lámparas, pero las irresponsables, encontrando las suyas vacías, dijeron a las otras, ‘Dadnos algo de vuestro aceite, porque nosotras hemos olvidado llenar el depósito’. Las otras contestan, “No os podemos dar, porque no tenemos suficiente para todas. Y si lo compartimos con vosotras, habrá insuficiente para iluminar el camino. Es mejor que alumbremos todo el camino con cinco lámparas a que tengamos luz sólo un pequeño trecho’.

“The irresponsible ones hastened to the oil vendor, but he would not serve them. And while they were away, the bridegroom arrived. And those who were ready lighted his way and joined the guests at the wedding, the doors then being closed. Later, when the irresponsible ones returned and stood outside shouting to be let in, the doorkeeper said, ‘Who are you? What purpose do you serve? Go away.’ Therefore, I say to you, be always alert, your spiritual lamps trimmed and filled with the oil which gives eternal light. For you never know the hour when you will be called.”

“Las irresponsable se apresuraron a ir al vendedor de aceite, pero él no pudo vendérselo. Y mientras ellas estaban fuera, el novio llegó. Y las que estaban preparadas alumbraron su camino y se juntaron a los invitados a la boda, cerrándose las puertas después. Más tarde, cuando las irresponsables volvieron y se encontraron fuera gritaban para estar dentro, el guarda de la puerta dijo, “Quiénes sois vosotras? Qué estáis buscando? Iros de aquí’. Por lo tanto, os digo, estad siempre alerta, vuestras lámparas espirituales preparadas y llenas del aceite que os traerá luz eterna. Porque nunca sabréis la hora en la que seréis llamados”

They who stood about Jesus asked, “Who is chosen to enter Heaven? And how is the selection made?”

Los que estaban alrededor de Jesús preguntaron, “Quién es elegido para entrar en los Cielos? Y cómo se hace la selección?

Jesus explained in this manner: “A king decided to collect all debts due and ordered those who owed money to come before him. One of these was so heavily indebted that he was in no position to repay, so the king ordered that he be sold into slavery to satisfy the debt. The debtor begged the king to be patient, saying that, given time, every last farthing would be paid. The king, taking pity on him, released the debtor from his obligations.

Jesús se explicó de esta forma, “Un rey decidió cobrar todas las deudas que le debían y ordenó a los deudores venir ante él. Uno de estos estaba tan fuertemente endeudado que no estaba en posición de pagar, así que el rey mandó que fuera vendido como esclavo para satisfacer la deuda. El deudor pidió al rey que tuviera paciencia, diciendo que, con el tiempo, hasta el último penique devolvería. El rey, teniendo piedad de él, liberó al deudor de sus obligaciones.

“A few days afterwards, the king’s debtor met a poor man who owed him just a small amount. And the king’s debtor took hold of him and said, ‘Repay the money due to me at once, for I have no patience with defaulters.’ The poor man begged him to be patient, saying that, given time, he would repay in full. But the other would not have it, and had the poor man committed to prison.

Pocos días después, el deudor del rey encontró a un pobre hombre que le debías sólo una pequeña cantidad. Y el deudor del rey fue a agarrarle y dijo, “Devuélveme el dinero que me debes hace tiempo, Porque yo no tengo paciencia con los tramposos’. El pobre hombre le rogó que fuera paciente, diciendo que, con el tiempo, él le pagaría todo. Pero el otro no lo tuvo, y mandó al pobre a prisión

“The poor man’s friends reported the matter to the king, who had his debtor brought before him. And he said, ‘You villain, because you pleaded with me to have pity, I released you from the whole of your debt. Had I not done so, you would have thought me harsh. Yet what consideration have you shown?’ Then the king condemned the man to severe punishment until the whole of the debt was paid. In this manner men are chosen for Heaven.

“Un amigo del pobre le contó el asunto al rey, que mandó traer a su deudor ante él. Y él dijo, ‘Tú, villano! Porque me suplicaste que tuviera piedad, Yo te libré de la totalidad de tu deuda. Si no lo hubiera hecho así, tú pensarías que era cruel. Sin embargo qué consideración has demostrado tú? Entonces el rey condenó al hombre a un severo castigo hasta que la totalidad de la deuda fuera pagada. De esta forma son escogidos los hombres para el Cielo.

“And therefore I say very earnestly, deal with others as you would be dealt with, not holding one law in your heart for yourself and letting another issue from your lips for others. Prepare yourselves for entry into Heaven, for this can only be done here and is the purpose of Earth. Do not think that, because you are not immediately chastised, your iniquities are overlooked.

“Y por lo tanto Yo os digo muy seriamente, tratad a los demás como quisierais ser tratados, no traigáis una ley en vuestro corazón para vosotros y apliquéis otra salida de vuestros labios para otros. Preparaos a vosotros mismos para entrar en los ciegos, porque eso sólo se puede hacer aquí, y es el propósito de la Tierra. No penséis que, porque no sois inmediatamente castigados, vuestras iniquidades son pasadas por alto.

“A sower went out into his grainfield and sowed with good seed, but during the night, an enemy came and strewed wheat-like weeds over the ground and went away. After the wheat blades had sprouted and the stalks began to form wheatheads, the weeds among them were revealed. Then the field laborer went to the landholder and said, ‘The field was sown with good seed, and yet it is now full of weeds. Shall we go and pull them up?’ The landholder answered, ‘Someone who wishes to harm me has done this. But in pulling up the weeds you may do more damage. Let both grow together until harvesting time. Then the reapers can separate the weeds from the wheat, stacking the weeds for burning, and gathering the wheat into the granary.’

“Un sembrados fue a su campo de trigo y sembró con una buena semilla, pero durante la noche un enemigo llegó y esparció sobre el terreno una mala hierba parecida al trigo y se fue. Antes de que las hojas del trigo surgieran y los tallos comenzaran a formar las espigas del trigo, las malas hierbas aparecieron entre ellas. Entonces el trabajador fue al arrendatario y le dijo, “El campo fue sembrado con buenas semillas, y sin embargo ahora está lleno de malas hierbas. Iremos y las arrancaremos?’ El arrendatario contestó, “Alguien que quiere perjudicarme ha hecho esto. Pero al arrancar las malas hierbas tú puedes hacer más daño. Deja a ambos crecer juntos hasta el tiempo de la cosecha. Entonces los segadores pueden separar los hierbajos del trigo, apartando las hierbas para quemarlas, y guardando el trigo en el granero’.

“Therefore, because transgressors go unpunished here, do not think they are overlooked or that there is not a day of accounting. Not a single deed or thought - whether it be good or bad - is overlooked.”

Por lo tanto, a pesar de que el transgresor quede impune aquí, no penséis que son olvidados o que no existe un día para rendir cuentas. Ninguna acción o pensamiento -sea malo o bueno- es pasada por alto

One in the crowd said, “But our thoughts harm no one.” Jesus replied, “Only yourself, for thoughts mold, strengthening or weakening the spirit. Is it not written, ‘The nature of man is formed according to his thoughts’?”

Uno entre la multitud dijo, “Pero nuestros pensamientos no dañan a nadie”. Jesús contestó, “Sólo a vosotros mismos, porque los pensamientos moldean, fortaleciendo y debilitando el espíritu. Acaso no está escrito, ‘la naturaleza del hombre está formada de acuerdo con sus pensamientos’?”

Jesus was asked, “What then is the spirit? For the Holy Books do not make this clear.”

Jesús fue preguntado, “Entonces qué es el espíritu? Porque los Libros Santos no deja esto claro?

He replied, “The spirit of man may be likened to a date seed planted in the darkness of the ground, giving no indication to anyone not knowing its nature of what it will become. When the tree springing from it is full grown, it spreads out in the sunshine - a haven for birds and a source of pleasure for men. Or it may be likened to leaven which a woman places in a bushel of flour; there it spreads throughout the whole to change its nature.

Él contestó, “El espíritu del hombre puede ser comparado a la semilla de un dátil plantado en la oscuridad del campo, sin dar explicaciones a nadie que desconoce su naturaleza y en lo que se convertirá. Cuando el árbol brotando de ella está completamente maduro, se abre durante las horas de sol -un paraíso para los pájaros y una fuente de placer para los hombres. O puede ser comparado a la mezcla que una mujer coloca en un macizo de flores; allí se esparce hasta que la totalidad cambia la su naturaleza.

“It is like a treasure buried in waste ground. The plot had no value until it was rumored that a treasure was there. Then men bid against each other to obtain it. While within the egg, a chick is self-sustaining; but once the shell is broken, it has to be fed. So it is with the spirit of man and the Holy Spirit. I assure you that every plant not nourished by the waters of life will wither and die.”

Es parecido a un tesoro escondido en un gran campo. La parcela no tiene valor hasta que se rumorea que el tesoro está allí. Los hombres pujan unos contra otros para obtenerlo. Mientras dentro del huevo, un polluelo se autoalimenta; pero una vez la cáscara está rota, él necesita comida. Lo mismo pasa con el espíritu del hombre y el Espíritu Santo. Yo os aseguro que cada planta no nutrida por las aguas de la vida se marchitará y morirá”

Several in the crowd said, “Tell us again about those who enter the Kingdom of Heaven.”

Bastantes entre la gente dijeron, “Háblanos otra vez sobre los que entran en el Reino de los Cielos”

Jesus replied with these parables: “Admittance may be likened to a wedding feast prepared by a king for his son. He dispatched servants, inviting many guests. But though each was told, ‘The feast is preparing even now, the geese and beasts are being roasted, the bread is in the ovens, and there is wine on the tables,’ yet those invited ignored the messengers, saying they were too busy with their own affairs, while they abused or even ill-treated them. When this came to the ears of the king, he sent soldiers to take those who had ill-treated his messengers and confined them in dismal dungeons.

Jesús contestó con estas parábolas: “La admisión puede ser comparada con un festín de boda preparado por un rey para su hijo. Él envió sirvientes, invitando a muchos amigos. Pero aunque cada uno dijo, ‘La fiesta se está preparando desde ahora, los gansos y los animales se están asando, el pan está en los hornos y en vino en las mesas’, sin embargo los invitados ignoraron a los mensajeros, diciendo que estaban demasiado ocupados con sus propios asuntos, mientras les injuriaban e incluso les maltrataban. Cuando esto llegó a oídos del rey, éste mandó soldados para detener a los que habían maltratado a sus mensajeros y los encerró en lúgubres mazmorras.

“The king then said to his servants, ‘Though I prepared a sumptuous feast, those I invited were unworthy of the honor I paid them. Go out again and invite any who will come.’ The servants went out into the streets, returning with many persons. However, while they were all seated at the table, the king noticed one who behaved badly, using lewd language to those beside him. The king called two servants and bid them take the man and throw him into the dungeons with the others. But to make sure, he went to one where there was the most filth so he would be in his own element. I have said before, though many are invited, few are chosen. Now I say, many choose not to come.

El rey, entonces, dijo a sus sirvientes, “ Aunque he preparado una fiesta suntuosa, los que he invitado eran dignos del honor que les he ofrecido. Id fuera e invitad a todo el que quiera venir’. Los sirvientes salieron a la calle, volviendo con muchas personas. Sin embargo, mientras estaban sentados a la mesa, el rey fue informado de uno que se comportaba malamente, usando un lenguaje impúdico con los que estaban a su lado. El rey envió dos sirvientes y les ordenó coger al hombre y arrojarle a las mazmorras con los otros. Pero para estar seguro, él fue a una dónde estaba la mayor parte de la suciedad y así podría estar en su elemento. Os lo he dicho antes, a pesar de que muchos son los invitados, pocos son los elegidos. Ahora os digo, muchos invitados no vienen.

“There is another way for separating the wheat from the chaff, illustrated by this parable. A man left for a distant country, but before departing he called his servants to him and entrusted him with his store of gold. To one he gave three bars of gold, to another two bars, and to another one bar, each receiving gold in accordance with his capabilities.

“Hay otra forma de separar el trigo de la paja, ilustrada por esta parábola. Un hombre marchó a un pueblo lejano, pero antes de partir llamó a sus sirvientes y les recompensó con su reserva de oro. A uno le dio tres barras de oro, a otro dos barras y al otro una barra, recibiendo cada uno el oro de acuerdo con sus capacidades.

“The servant who received three bars of gold went and exchanged these for silver, spending this in pleasure and high living, thinking that with all this silver he could have a really good time. The servant who received two bars was a cautious man, and he buried his gold in a safe place, for he thought it best not to take chances with it. The servant who had received one bar went and bought goods which he resold, and by this and other efforts he obtained another gold bar, for he thought to himself, ‘As the master did not think me as capable as the others, I must prove I am.’

El sirviente que recibió tres barras de oro fue y las cambió por plata, dilapidándola en placeres y buena vida, pensando que con toda esa plata podría tener una vida realmente buena. El sirviente que recibió dos barras de oro era un hombre prudente, y guardó su oro en un lugar seguro, porque pensó que era mejor no correr riesgos con él. El sirviente que recibió una barra fue y compró bienes que revendió, y con este y otros esfuerzos obtuvo otra barra de oro, porque pensó para sí, ‘Como el dueño no pensó que yo soy tan capaz como los otros, debo probar que lo soy’

“When the master returned, he called his servants for an accounting. And the one who had received three bars of gold said, ‘Good master, with so much wealth I could not resist temptation and spent it enjoying myself, never thinking about the day of accounting.’ The master said, ‘You are an untrustworthy scoundrel,’ and he placed him in bondage until the whole of the value was repaid. The man who had received two bars of gold said, ‘Master, I knew you were a hard man and was afraid to take any risks, so I safeguarded the gold; here it is.’ The master said, ‘You have been neither good nor bad, but took your ease while I was away; go about your job, but expect no promotion.’ The man who received one bar of gold said, ‘Having only one bar, I increased it to two, for I knew you would need gold on your return and have been a good master.’ To this one the man said, ‘Well done. You have proved worthy of my trust. I will now place you in charge of my treasury.’”

Cuando el dueño volvió, llamó a sus sirvientes a rendir cuentas. Y el que había recibido tres barras de oro dijo, ‘Buen señor, con tantas riquezas no he podido resistir a la tentación y emplearlo en mi diversión, nunca he pensado en el día del recuento’. El dueño dijo, ‘Tú eres un embustero falso’, y lo trató como esclavo hasta que reparara el valor total. El hombre que había recibido dos barras de oro dijo, ‘Señor, Yo sabía que tú eras un hombre duro y tenía miedo de correr cualquier riesgo, así que salvaguardé el oro. Aquí está’. El dueño dijo, “Tú no has sido ni bueno ni malo, sino que elegiste la comodidad mientras yo estaba lejos;Vé a tu trabajo, pero no esperes un ascenso’. El hombre que había recibido una barra de oro dijo, ‘Teniendo sólo una barra, la he aumentado hasta dos, porque yo sabía que necesitarías oro a tu vuelta y has sido un buen dueño’. A este hombre el dueño le dijo, ‘Bien hecho. Tu has probado merecer mi confianza. Ahora te colocaré a cargo de mis tesoros.’”

One of the people gathered about Jesus said, “How should I treat my servants? For I have one who is troublesome - though perhaps it is his youth.”

Uno del público reunido alrededor de Jesús dijo, “Cómo deberíamos tratar a nuestros sirvientes? Porque yo tengo uno que es molesto – aunque quizá es por su juventud”

Jesus then told this parable: “A man had a garden plot set aside for vines, but a self-planted fig tree grew among them. In the fruiting season, the man came to this plot accompanied by his gardener, who said, ‘This fig tree is interfering with the vines. If it fruited, it might not matter; but as it does not, would it be best to cut it down? For it is only taking goodness from the soil, which could be used more profitably by the vines.’ The man said, ‘Leave it for another season, but give it a little attention. Then if it fails to fruit next season, cut it down. I like figs, but a new cutting might take a long time to mature. And this tree, having chosen its own situation, may yet prove more profitable in this plot than the vines.’”

Jesús entonces contó esta parábola: “Un hombre colocó un jardín junto a una viña, pero una higuera brotó por sí misma entre ellas. En la estación de la fruta el hombre llegó a esta parcela acompañado por su jardinero, que dijo, ‘Esta higuera molesta en la viña. Si da fruto, no pasa nada, pero si no lo da, no sería mejor arrancarla? Porque lo único que hace es chupar de la buena tierra, que podría ser utilizada preferiblemente por las cepas’ Entonces el hombre dijo, ‘déjala hasta la próxima estación, pero no le prestes mucha atención. Luego si no produce frutos en la próxima estación, córtala. A mí me gustan los higos, pero un nuevo corte tardaría mucho en madurar. Y este árbol, habiendo elegido su propia ubicación, puede probar que es preferible a las cepas en este terreno.’”

Jesus said, “If a fig tree grow among vines, it can be left, for both produce good fruit. But if it grow among thorns, then these are cut down and the fig tree left on its own. If a man hire three laborers for his vineyard and there is work only for two, he dismisses the one least worthy of his hire. Yet everyone who labors must be paid his due. But if one pour less than full measure into the task, he cheats no less than one who deceives at the weighing.”

Jesús dijo, “Si una higuera surge entre las cepas, se puede dejar, porque ambas producen un fruto bueno. Pero si surge entre los espinos, entonces éstos se cortan y la higuera permanece en su propio sitio. Si un hombre contrata tres obreros para sus viñas y sólo hay trabajo para dos, expulsa al último que ha contratado. Sin embargo cada uno que trabaja debe recibir lo debido. Pero si alguno emplea menos que lo acordado en el trabajo, no defrauda menos que el que roba en el peso”

Some self-righteous people who picked pieces out of the law to suit their convenience - as a child picks segments from a pomegranate - and lived by these ridiculed Jesus.

Algunas gentes santurronas que escogen fragmentos fuera de la ley siguiendo su conveniencia -como un niño elige trocitos de una granada – y viven de ello ridiculizaban a Jesús.

But He said to them, “You who try to impress others with your righteousness are hypocrites, but what goes on in your minds is not overlooked. Admiration and popularity may benefit you in this world but count for nothing in the world to come, unless worthily earned. I come to herald the Rule of God when such as you will be swept aside by those who serve His cause.”

Pero Él les dijo, “Vosotros que intentáis impresionar a otros con vuestra honradez sois unos hipócritas, pero lo que hay en vuestras mentes no se olvida. La admiración y la popularidad pueden beneficiaros en este mundo pero no cuenta para nada en el mundo que llega, a no ser que os lo ganéis. Yo vengo a anunciar el Ley de Dios cuando los que son como vosotros serán expulsados lejos de los que sirven Su causa.

Some in the crowd shouted, “Who will You take to serve it?”

Alguien entre el público gritó, “A quién escogerás para servirle?

Jesus replied, “When the trumpets sound the rallying call and two men are reaping in a field, one will be taken and the other ignored. Two scribes will be writing in a room, one will be taken and the other ignored. Two women will be grinding corn, one will be taken and the other ignored.”

Jesús contestó, “Cuando el sonido de las trompetas llamen a reunirse y dos hombres estén segando en el campo, uno será elegido y el otro ignorado. Dos escribas estarán escribiendo en una habitación, uno será elegido y el otro ignorado. Dos mujeres estarán moliendo maíz, una será elegida y la otra ignorada.”

Someone said, “Where will they be taken?”

Alguno dijo, “Dónde serán llevados?”

Jesus answered, “Vultures gather where the carcass lies and bees where the flowers grow. Flies are drawn to stinking meat. Brave men converge on the battlefield, while cowards seek their hideouts. The day of decision will come like a roll of thunder, and on that day those serving the cause of God will be separated from those who serve the powers of darkness.”

Jesús respondió, “Los buitres se juntan dónde yace un cadáver y las abejas dónde crecen las flores. Las moscas son llevadas a picotear la carne. Los hombres valientes se unen en el campo de batalla, mientras los cobardes buscan su escondite. El día de la decisión llegará como un retumbar de truenos, y en ese día los que han servido a la causa de Dios serán separados de los que han servido al poder de la oscuridad”

There were many other parables which Jesus used in this place, to bring understanding to the people. He taught simply so all could grasp what He said, but afterwards, when alone with the twelve, He explained things differently, revealing a deeper meaning.

Hay muchas otras parábolas que Jesús utilizó en este lugar, para llevar el conocimiento al pueblo. Él hablaba simplemente para que todos pudieran entender lo que decía, pero después, cuando estaba sólo con los doce, explicaba las cosas de forma diferente, revelando el significado oculto
