Chapter 11- Capítulo 11

Jesus then went by boat, and where He landed there was a man who lived in a deserted tomb, because he was tormented by an intrusion from the kingdom of dark spirits. Attempts had been made to confine him in fetters, but because of the strength unnaturally given, he easily escaped. Day and night he would shriek among the tombs and upon the hillside, terrifying people and often injuring himself by falling.

Entonces Jesús se marchó en un bote, y dónde llegó había un hombre que vivía en una tumba desierta porque estaba atormentado por una invasión del reino de los negros espíritus. Se habían hecho intentos de amarrarle con cadenas, pero a causa de la sobrenatural fuerza que tenía, escapaba fácilmente. Día y noche chillaba entre las tumbas y sobre las laderas, aterrorizando a la gente y a menudo lastimándose con las caídas.

Jesus knew the nature of the tormenting thing and called upon the power within Him, so it entered the body of the possessed man, wrestling with the evil thing inside him. Then the man ran screaming among a herd of swine, and two fell into a ravine, but shortly the man became calm, for the evil intruder had departed from him.

Jesús conocía la naturaleza de lo que le atormentaba y confiaba en el poder dentro de Él, así que entró en el cuerpo del hombre poseído, luchando con el mal dentro de él. Entonces el hombre se escondió entre una piara de cerdos, y dos cayeron a un barranco, pero en poco tiempo el hombre se calmó, porque el intruso demonio lo abandonó.

The swineherds ran away to carry the tale of these events to people round about who came to see for themselves what had happened. When they saw the mad man was rational, they became afraid and asked Jesus to go away.

El porquero salió corriendo a llevar la historia de lo ocurrido a la gente de los alrededores que

vino a ver por sí misma lo que había pasado. Cuando vieron que el enfermo había recobrado la razón, sintieron miedo y le pidieron a Jesús que se marchara.

When Jesus was preparing to depart, the man who had been cured begged to go along with Him. But Jesus said, “No, you remain here and bear witness for Me.” The man spread the tale of what had been done for him through all the free cities, for he received much silver in the market places.

Cuando Jesús estaba preparado para irse, el hombre que había sido curado pidió ir junto con Él. Pero Jesús dijo, “No, tú quédate aquí y sé un testigo para Mí”. El hombre contaba la historia de lo que había pasado con él por todas las ciudades libres, porque recibía mucha plata en las plazas del mercado.

Coming close to another town on the seashore where a crowd was gathered to hear Him, Jesus saw Matthew seated where dues were collected, and He said unto him, “Are you ready to follow Me?” For He had spoken with Matthew before. Matthew replied, “I am ready, but first come and eat with me.”

Al llegar cerca de otra ciudad junto al mar donde una multitud se había reunido para oírle, Jesús vio a Mateo sentado donde debían reunirse, y Él le dijo, “Estás preparado para seguirme?” Porque ya había hablado con Mateo antes. Mateo contestó, “Estoy preparado, pero primero ven y como conmigo.

When Jesus arrived at Matthew’s house, He found other tax gatherers had assembled there, with many others who did not observe the laws of Moses which are in the Holy Books of the Jews.

Cuando Jesús llegó a casa de Mateo, encontró que otros recaudadores de impuestos se habían reunido allí, con muchos otros que no observaban las leyes de Moisés que están en los Libros Santos de los Judíos.

While eating, Jesus said, “No man of himself can know right from wrong. For what is right in one man’s eyes may be wrong in another’s, therefore strife arises among them. Only when men accept a single standard of judgment and abide by it can there be peace. When men live together without the light of the law, they are like a house built with unmortared bricks, or like men trying to tow a boat but all pulling in different directions.

Durante la comida, Jesús dijo, “Nadie por sí mismo puede distinguir lo correcto de lo incorrecto, Porque lo que es correcto a los ojos de uno puede ser incorrecto a los de otro, por lo que surgen disputas entre ellos. Sólo cuando los hombres aceptan un único patrón para los juicios y se atiene a él, puede haber paz. Cuando los hombres viven juntos sin la luz de ley, son como una casa construida con ladrillos sin mortero o como hombres tratando de remolcar un bote pero empujando todos en una dirección distinta.

“There are two laws - the law of men and the law of the Father Who is in Heaven. When I speak of the law, I do not mean the law of men. I am the Light illuminating God’s law so men see it more clearly, and though I fulfill the law, I do not change it. Never say ‘this is right’ or ‘that is wrong,’ but only ‘this is right or wrong according to the law, and in the Light of Jesus.’

“Hay dos leyes -la ley de los hombres y la ley del Padre que está en los Cielos. Cuando Yo hablo de la ley, no me refiero a la ley de los hombres. Yo soy la Luz que Ilumina la ley de Dios de forma que los hombres la vean más claramente, y aunque cumplo la ley, no la cambio. Y nunca digo “esto es correcto” o “esto es incorrecto”, sino sólo “esto es correcto o incorrecto de acuerdo con la ley y la Luz de Jesús”.

“I bring new oil for the lamp of the law, for that within it is now impure, and the light produces too much obscuring smoke. For I am the Son of Man and bear the sufferings of men, coming to fulfill their hopes even as it has been foretold. Is it not said among the Jesseneth that the Son of Man is the perfected Man Who will set the standard for those who wish to be true sons of God?”

“Yo traigo un nuevo aceite para la lámpara de la ley, porque ésta por dentro es ahora impura, y la luz produce demasiado humo que la oscurece. Porque yo soy el Hijo del Hombre y llevo los sufrimientos de los hombres, viniendo a cumplir sus esperanzas según ha sido profetizado. No se dice entre los Jesseneth que el Hijo del Hombre es el Hombre perfecto Que establecerá las normas para los que quieren ser verdaderos hijos de Dios?”.

Later, when Jesus went outside, He found some Perushim standing apart, as was their custom, and one put the question to Jesus, “How can You claim to be a Teacher, interpreting the laws of God, when You associate with tax gatherers and lawbreakers?”

Más tarde, cuando Jesús salió, encontró a algunos Perushims sentados aparte, como era su costumbre y uno le hizo una pregunta a Jesús, “Cómo puedes declarar que eres un Maestro, interpretando las leyes de Dios, cuando Te asocias con los recaudadores de impuestos y los que quebrantan la ley?”

Jesus replied, “It is not the healthy who need the attentions of a physician, but those who are ill. It is the tree growing out of the sand which requires watering, not the one growing by the river. I come to minister to the spiritually sick, not to the righteous who have their consolation.”

Jesús contestó, “No es el sano el que necesita la atención del médico, sino los que están enfermos. Es el árbol que brota de la arena el que necesita ser regado, no el que crece junto al río. Yo vengo a cuidar al enfermo espiritual, no al honrado que tiene su consuelo”

A man in the crowd said, “This is a day of fasting, kept by all who are truly religious. Yet here are You and Your disciples eating and drinking.”

Un hombre de entre la multitud dijo, “Hoy es día de descanso, respetado por todos los que son verdaderamente religiosos. Pero aquí estás Tú y Tus discípulos comiendo y bebiendo”

Jesus said, “Is it usual for attendants at the bridal bower to deprive themselves of pleasure while the bridegroom is with them? Soon he will depart, and that is the time for hearts to be heavy. A heart weighed down without cause is an unnecessary burden, adding neither joy nor benefit to the lives of men. Fasting is good, but when it becomes a routine religious rite, it is no more than a purposeless vexation.”

Jesús dijo, “Es normal que los que esperan junto a la cámara nupcial se abstengan ellos de placeres mientras el desposado está con ellos? Pronto él marchará, y ese es el momento para que los corazones sean fuertes. Un corazón con poco peso sin razón es un peso innecesario, que no añade ni alegría ni beneficio a la vida de los hombres. Ayunar es bueno, pero cuando se convierte en un rutinario rito religioso, no es más que una vejación sin propósito.”

A soldier in the crowd asked Jesus, “Do You uphold the teachings of John of the Wilderness? For there was a man I can understand.”

Un soldado de entre la multitud preguntó a Jesús “Tú sostienes las enseñanzas de Juan el del Desierto? Porque era un hombre al que yo podía entender.”

Jesus replied, “John sent men to Me enquiring whether I was the Promised One or should they look for another. I said, ‘Go back and inform John of all the things you have heard and seen here, and how the poor are learning about the coming of the Rule of God and the disinherited told when justice will reign.’

“People went out into the wilderness, expecting to find a great man, but what had they in mind? A man speaking like the prophets of old or a nobleman clad in garments of fine linen? John dressed in a manner fit for the place and purpose, and he spoke in accordance with the message he had to convey. He was the man of whom the Holy Books speak - a voice of one crying in the wilderness, preparing the path for One Who follows.

Jesús contestó, “Juan me envió hombres preguntando si Yo era el Prometido o tendrían que esperar a otro. Yo dije, “Volved y decidle a Juan todas las cosas que habéis oído y visto aquí, y cómo el pobre es instruido acerca de la llegada del Enviado de Dios y el desheredado habla de cuando la justicia vendrá (¿?).

La gente se internó en el desierto, esperando encontrar un gran hombre, pero qué tenían ellos en el pensamiento? Un hombre hablando como un profeta de los antiguos o un noble vestido con túnica de fino lino? John vestía de forma apropiada para el lugar y su propósito, y hablaba con el mensaje que tenía como conveniente. Él era el hombre del que los Libros Santos hablan – la voz del que clama en el desierto, preparando el camino para El Que seguirá.

“I tell you with all sincerity, no mother ever gave birth to a better man than John, yet when the Rule of God comes, everyone living will have to exceed him. Ever since John declared these things he was harried with violence, even though all the prophets before him foretold present events. He spoke with the voice of Elijah, and if any of you have the understanding, you will know what I mean.

“Os digo con toda seguridad, nunca una madre dio a luz a un hombre mejor que John, pero cuando el Enviado de Dios llega, todo lo viviente tendrá que superarle. Después de que John declaró estas cosas fue perseguido con violencia, aunque todos los profetas anteriores a él pronosticaron los sucesos presentes. Él hablaba con la voz de Elías, y si alguno de vosotros tiene conocimiento, sabrá lo que quiero decir.

“Concerning this generation, which is wrapped up within itself and blind to all going on about it, there is little to say. It is like children at play calling out to one another, ‘We play the pipes, but you refuse to dance; we raise a lament, but you will not mourn.’ Like all good men, John was misunderstood; for few knew the measure of greatness. He lived simply, neither eating nor drinking to excess. And because of his way of life, men called him ‘crazy.’

“Respecto a esta generación, que está absorta en sí misma y ciega a todo lo que le llega, hay poco que decir. Son como niños y juegan y se chillan unos a otros, “nosotros tocamos la gaita, pero vosotros no queréis bailar; elevamos un lamento, pero no queréis llorar”. Como todos los hombres buenos John era un incomprendido; porque pocos conocían la medida de su grandeza. Vivió austeramente, ni comiendo ni bebiendo en exceso. Y, a causa de esta forma de vida, los hombres le llamaban “loco”

“The Servant of Man comes along and goes among the people, eating and drinking with them, and He is accused of gluttony, loose living and drunkenness. What must a man do to prove himself in the eyes of the people? Whatever he does is wrong.”

“El Siervo del Hombre se adelanta y camina entre la gente, comiendo y bebiendo con ella, y Él es acusado de glotonería, vida disipada y borrachera. Qué tiene que hacer un hombre para dar pruebas de sí mismo a los ojos del pueblo? Cualquier cosa que haga está mal”

One of the Perushim who was nearby said to Jesus, “We understand Your meaning, but where do You stand in relation to the law? Have You come to take it away or declare it obsolete?”

Uno de los Perushim que estaba cerca le dijo a Jesús, “Entendemos lo que quieres decir, pero cuál es tu postura con respecto a la ley? Has venido a abolirla o declararla anticuada?”

Jesus replied, “No one patches an old cloak with new fabric, for this shows up its age without strengthening it. Likewise, no sensible person puts new wine into old wineskins, for this causes them to split, the wine pouring out so neither the wine nor the wineskins have any value. Is it not much wiser to put new wine into new wineskins? I have come to place something beside that which is already there, to hold a mirror to the law and to man, so both may be seen with greater clarity.”

Jesús contestó, “Nadie remienda una antigua capa con un tejido nuevo, porque esto indica su edad sin reforzarla. De igual manera, ninguna persona sensible echa el vino nuevo dentro de viejos odres, porque esto causará que se raje, derramándose el vino y ni el vino ni los odres tendrán ningún valor. No es mucho más sabio poner el vino nuevo en nuevos odres? Yo he venido a colocar algunas cosas junto a lo que siempre ha estado, a mantener un espejo para la ley y el hombre, de forma que ambos puedan ser vistos con mayor claridad.”

A poor man standing nearby said, “What use is the wisdom of the Holy Books? Will it provide our bread?” Jesus replied, “What use is a lamp at night? Will its light appease hunger? Is it worthless because it cannot do so? Each thing has its appointed use. The foot should not be called upon to do the work of the arm, nor the ear the work of the eyes.

Un hombre pobre que estaba cerca dijo, “Qué utilidad tiene la sabiduría de los Libros Santos? Nos proveerán de pan?.” Jesús contestó, “Qué utilidad tiene una lámpara en la noche? Saciará su luz al hambriento? Es despreciable porque no puede hacerlo? Cada cosa tiene su uso apropiado. El pie no puede utilizarse para realizar el trabajo del brazo, ni el oído el trabajo de los ojos.

“A carpenter does not do the work of a potter, nor does a weaver make plows. A pupil may not be a good teacher, nor a servant a good master. Each must seek only to excel in the position he has, and not to be better than others at their own task. Whoever supports Me, that person will I support; and I will strive with those who are against Me.

“Un carpintero no hace el trabajo de un alfarero, ni un tejedor hace arados. Un aprendiz no puede ser un buen maestro, ni un sirviente un buen dueño. Cada uno debe buscar sólo la excelencia en a posición que tiene, y no ser mejor que otros en sus propios oficios. Quienquiera que me soporte, a esa persona yo soportaré; y lucharé con los que estén contra Mi.

“I have not come to bring peace but to put a sword into the hands of men, setting sons against their fathers and daughters against their mothers. For nothing is worthy if a man will not fight for it. Anyone following Me will find enemies among his own kindred, and though he love his parents above all else, I will give him a cause which is greater. My burden is not light and must be shouldered with fortitude and courage. Those finding it too heavy must go elsewhere.

Yo no he venido a traer la paz sino a poner una espada en las manos de los hombres, poniendo a los hijos contra los padres y las hijas contra sus madres. Porque nada es meritorio si un hombre no lucha por sí. Cualquiera que Me siga encontrará enemigos entre su propia familia, y aunque ame a sus padres sobre todas las demás cosas, Yo les daré una causa que es mayor. Mi carga no es suave y debe ser cargada con fortaleza y coraje. Los que lo encuentren demasiado duro deben ir a cualquier otra parte.

“The man who seeks to preserve his life through cowardice will be deprived of its benefits, and he who is prepared to make sacrifices for the cause of man will surely gain the crown of life. Whoever receives a good and just man openly, giving him his due, shall in turn be given the reward of his merit. But those who expect to receive rewards bestowable only by One greater than a prophet will be disappointed.”

“El hombre que busca preservar su vida aunque con cobardía será desprovisto de sus beneficios, y el que está preparado para hacer sacrificios por la causa del hombre seguramente ganará la corona de la vida. Quienquiera que recibe un buen y justo hombre abiertamente, dándole sus derechos, al tiempo entregará la recompensa por sus méritos. Pero los que esperan recibir la recompensa otorgable por Alguien mayor que un profeta será desilusionado.

It was after this that Jesus said to His disciples, “When the task is difficult, a man seeks consolation from his father. A man may be lonely among many, but no one need be lonely in the spirit, for this is never shut off from communication with a source of comfort.”

Fué después de esto cuando Jesús dijo a sus discípulos, “Cuando la tarea es difícil, un hombre busca consuelo en su padre. Un hombre puede estar muy solo entre muchos, pero nadie necesita esta solo en el espíritu, porque éste nunca está fuera de la comunicación con una fuente de confort.

Then Jesus prayed, “O Father above Heaven and Earth, Your Son submits to Your will. And if things declared in Your name remain mysteries to the learned but are revelations to the simple-hearted, You know best, My Father. You have placed a great responsibility on Your Son, but few heed Him. The Father’s words, spoken through the mouth of His Son, are not highly regarded.”

Entonces Jesús rezó, “Oh Padre por encima de los Cielos y la Tierra, Tu Hijo se somete a tu voluntad. Y si las cosas declaradas en Tu nombre permanecen misteriosas al entendido pero son revelaciones para los simples de corazón, Tú lo sabes mejor, Padre Mío. Has colocado una gran responsabilidad en Tu hijo, pero pocos Le hacen caso. Las palabras del Padre, dichas por boca de Su Hijo, no son muy respetadas”

Later, at another place, Jesus said to the people gathered there, “Follow Me, all those who are overburdened and weary, and I will help you. Take the yoke of My cause upon you, and learn from Me, for this will ease and not add to your load. I am understanding and compassionate, not expecting anyone to bear a load too heavy for them. The heavy-laden shall know the light and be moved from the darkness, but they who cast aside their burden and go astray are lost forever in darkness. Life loads each according to his capacity, and no two bear a similar burden.”

Más tarde, en otro lugar, Jesús dijo a la gente reunida allí, “Seguidme, todos los que estáis oprimidos y cansados, y Yo os socorreré. Tomad el yugo de Mi causa sobre vosotros y aprended de Mí, porque esto os aliviará y no aumentará vuestra carga. Yo soy comprensivo y compasivo, no espero que nadie lleve una carga demasiado pesada para él. El cargado duramente conocerá la luz y será rescatado de la oscuridad, pero los que tiren aparte su carga y vayan extraviados serán abandonados para siempre en la oscuridad. La vida carga a cada uno de acuerdo con sus capacidades y dos no soportan un trabajo similar.

At this time, Jesus always kept some disciples with Him when He walked about, and one Sabbath He and two of them were following a small pathway leading past uncut corn ripening in the husk. The disciples plucked a handful - for the law permitted them to do this, providing they did not enter the field or take any away - and, rubbing the ears between their fingers, ate the grains. Three Perushim were passing by, and they rebuked the disciples and said to Jesus, “Why do You allow Your followers to do things not permitted on the Sabbath?”

En aquel tiempo Jesús siempre llevaba a algún discípulo con Él cuando paseaba por los alrededores, y un Sábado Él y dos de ellos fueron siguiendo y sendero que llevaba a un campo de maíz sin segar en su vaina. Los discípulos arrancaron un puñado -porque la ley no les permitía hacerlo, prohibiéndoles entrar al campo ni pasear- y frotando las espigas entre sus dedos, comieron los granos. Tres Perushims pasaban por allí, y regañaron a los discípulos y le dijeron a Jesús, “Por qué permites a tus seguidores hacer cosas que están prohibidas en Sábado?”

Jesus answered, “Does the deed affect the day? Have you not read that, when driven by hunger, David went into the House of God and took the sanctified loaves to eat, sharing them with his men? Though these loaves were reserved for priestly fare, did he not justify himself by saying all produced by the Earth were for the use of men? Surely the Sabbath was made for the sake of man, and not man for the sake of the Sabbath! As man bows to the needs of life, so the Sabbath must bow to the needs of men.”

Jesús contestó, “Acaso esta acción afecta al día? No habéis leído que, cuando era empujado por el hambre, David fue as la Casa de Dios y cogió los panes consagrados para comer, compartiéndolos con sus hombres? Aunque aquellos panes estaban reservados para comida de los sacerdotes, no se justificó él mismo al decir que todos lo producido por la Tierra era para uso de los hombres? Seguramente el Sábado fue establecido por el interés del hombre, y ningún hombre en atención al Sábado! Igual que un hombre respeta las necesidades de la vida, así el Sábado debe respetar las necesidades de los hombres”

Towards evening, as they returned, Jesus saw a man working in the fields and said to him, “If your labors are dedicated to the service of God, you are blessed; but if it is otherwise, you are a lawbreaker.”

Hacia la tarde, según volvían, Jesús vio a un hombre trabajando el campo y le dijo, “Si tu trabajo está dedicado al servicio de Dios, estás bendecido; pero si es por otro motivo, eres un quebrantador de la ley”

The disciples, hearing this, said, “Sire, is there so much difference between the things of the morning and the things of the evening?” Jesus said, “The same difference as between an empty stomach and a full one; the same thing may be forgiven one man but not another.”

Los discípulos, oyendo esto, dijeron, “Señor, hay mucha diferencia entre las cosas de la mañana y las de la tarde?”, Jesús dijo, “La misma diferencia como entre un estómago vacío y otro lleno; lo mismo puede ser prohibido a un hombre pero no a otro”

On another Sabbath, Jesus came out of the Temple to be accosted by a man with a paralyzed arm who said, “Sire, I am a mason who can no longer be useful and must humiliate myself by begging for food to feed my family. Let me become a whole man again, not for my sake but for the sake of those depending upon me.”

Otro Sábado, Jesús en el exterior del Templo llegó a ser acosado por un hombre con un brazo paralizado que le dijo, “Señor, soy un albañil que ya no puede ser contratado y debe humillarme para pedir alimentos para dar de comer a mi familia. Hazme un hombre completo de nuevo, no por mi beneficio sino por el beneficio de los que dependen de mí”

Nearby stood some self-righteous members of the congregation who watched closely to see what Jesus would do. But He, knowing their thoughts, called them over and said, “Let Me know your views concerning the keeping of the Sabbath. Should good be done when it would be uncharitable to leave it undone?” They said, “We abide by the law as it is interpreted for us by those knowing better than we.”

Cerca de allí se encontraban algunos autojustificados miembros de la congregación que observaban de cerca para ver lo que Jesús haría. Pero Él, conociendo sus pensamientos, los llamó y dijo, “ Dejadme saber vuestro punto de vista acerca de guardar el Sábado, Estaría bien hecho si fuera falta de caridad dejar esto sin hacer?” Ellos dijeron, “Nosotros respetamos la ley según nos ha sido interpretada por los que la conocen mejor que nosotros”.

Jesus became angry and was hurt in His heart, for their hard-heartedness and wrongful interpretation of the law were indications of their spiritual apathy. So He healed the man’s arm. The self-righteous see no wrong in themselves, only in others. And they interpret all things to accord with their own convenience.

Jesús se enfadó y se ofendió en su corazón, porque sus cabezas duras y su interpretación equivocada de la ley eran indicaciones de su apatía espiritual. Así que le curó el brazo al hombre. Los autojustificados no ven lo malo en ellos mismos, sólo en otros. E interpretan todas las cosas de acuerdo con su propia conveniencia.

Then the self-righteous ones left, plotting among themselves, and they decided to become supporters of Herod, who was against Jesus. They said, “Let us set a trap for this troublemaker Who condemns our ways. He reproaches us for wrongdoing when we simply obey the law, and accuses us of things which He declares to be sinful but which are not more than natural weaknesses of men.

Entonces algunos autojustificados marcharon, maquinando entre ellos, y decidieron hacerse partidarios de Herodes, que estaba contra Jesús. Ellos dijeron, “ Vamos a ponerle una trampa a este alborotador Que condena nuestras costumbres. “He proclaims Himself to be the mouthpiece of God, so let us test Him and see. Let us find out whether He speaks true or false. We will send men to beat Him up, and see then whether God comes to His aid. Let other men abuse Him and hurl insults at Him, heaping every kind of indignity upon Him, treating Him roughly to test His gentleness. We will heckle Him and cause commotion whenever He speaks, and see whether He abides by His own teachings under provocation.”

“Él Mismo declara ser un instrumento de la palabra de Dios, así que vamos a ponerle una prueba y veremos. Vamos a saber si Él dice la verdad o miente. Mandaremos a unos hombres que le ataquen y veremos si Dios viene en Su ayuda. Mandaremos a otros que Le agredan y Le lancen insultos, añadiendo toda clase de indignidades sobre Él, tratándole indignamente para probar su mansedumbre. Le interrumpiremos y armaremos alboroto donde quiera que Él hable. Y veremos si se atiene a sus propias enseñanzas en la provocación”

They laid their plans. However, there were others who came to Jesus and asked Him how they would recognize the Deliverer when He appeared among them.

Jesus said, “Is it not written, ‘He will judge the disinherited and lowly who trust in Him. He will smite the Earth with the rod of His tongue and destroy wickedness. He will be girdled with integrity and belted with trustworthiness’?”

Ellos trazaron sus planes. Sin embargo, había otros que se acercaron a Jesús y Le preguntaron cómo podrían reconocer al Libertador cuando apareciera entre ellos

Jesús dijo, “Es que no está escrito, ‘Juzgará a los desheredados y a los humildes que confíen en Él. Él castigará a la Tierra con el látigo de Su lengua y destruirá la maldad. Estará rodeado de integridad y ceñido con verdaderos méritos’?”

Then some said, “Surely this Man is God’s Anointed.”

Someone said, “Sire, how do we know the Deliverer will come to us?”

Otro dijo, “Señor, cómo haremos para sabee que el Libertador vendrá a nosotros?”

Jesus said, “Is it not written, ‘He will come to the worthy and just, but to the people He will be like a winnowing fan, ensuring only the best are gathered in’?

Jesús dijo, “No está escrito, ‘Él llegará al honrado y al justo, pero para el pueblo será como una máquina de aventar, asegurándose de que sólo lo mejor se recoja’?

“It is also said, ‘He will bless those who follow Him with wisdom and gladness. He will be sinless, gathering together a dedicated people whom He will lead in righteousness as an example to all nations. They will cast out the ungodly from their midst. Those born in the days of the Deliverer will witness the things He will do for the generations which follow.’

“Y también se ha dicho, ‘Él bendecirá a los que Le sigan con sabiduría y alegría. Él estará limpio de pecado, reuniendo junto un pueblo dedicado al que Él moverá a la honradez como un ejemplo para todas las naciones. Ellos quitarán la maldad de entre ellos. “Is it not also written, ‘The words of His mouth will smite the Earth forever, and, for the chosen among men, there will be a guiding light for the rest of their days’?”

Chapter 10- Capítulo 10

Before going out among the people to declare Himself, Jesus returned to Genesareth - the town of His upbringing - accompanied by His disciples. He went first to the place where His mother was staying, and though she greeted Him warmly because she loved her Eldest Son, Mary did not fully understand Jesus. She always knew He would grow up to be different and would become a Man of God because, when carrying Him, she dreamed that a bright flaming Star had come down from Heaven and entered her womb.

Antes de ir entre la gente a darse a conocer, Jesús volvió a Genesareth – la ciudad de Su educación- acompañado por sus discípulos. Fue en primer lugar al sitio en que Su madre estaba instalada, y aunque ella Le saludó calurosamente porque amaba mucho a su hijo mayor, María no entendía del todo a Jesús. Ella siempre supo que Él había nacido para ser diferente y llegaría a convertirse en un Hombre de Dios porque, cuando estaba embarazada de Él, había soñado que una brillante y ardiente estrella había caído del cielo y había entrado en su vientre.

His own kinfolk had once thought Him mad and sought to take control of Him. But now, His brothers and sisters having grown up, they no longer troubled Him. They had said, “He has lost His father and seeks another. For is it not written, ‘I will be His Father, and He will be My Son’?”

Su propia familia alguna vez había pensado mal de Él, y procuraban controlarle. Pero ahora, sus hermanos y hermanas habían crecido y ya no Le temían. Ellos decían, “Él ha dejado a su padre y ha buscado otro. Acaso no está escrito, “Yo seré Su Padre, y él será mi hijo?”

When younger, Jesus had been overawed by the prospects of the future, and often fearful that He might not fulfill the promise. But He overcame this, and any fears of His inability. It is in this, and His dedication, that His greatness was revealed.

Cuando era más joven, Jesús había estado intimidado por la perspectiva del futuro, y muchas veces tenía miedo de que Él no cumpliera la promesa. Pero superó éste y cualquier miedo en sus hasbilidades. Es en ésto y en Su dedicación, dónde Su grandeza fue revelada.

Though Jesus tapped the Holy Spirit of God, and in Him it was stored up as in a water tank, He still had to overcome the weaknesses of men. For without so doing, His greatness could not be made manifest. Those who say He was something other than man detract from His greatness, for then the things He had to do would have been easier to accomplish. Perhaps they cannot comprehend the heights to which men can rise when inspired by God, the Father of all men.

Aunque Jesús contenía el Santo Espíritu de Dios y en Él se guardaba como en un depósito de agua, Él todavía tenía que vencer las debilidades de los hombres. Porque sin hacerlo, Su grandeza no se haría manifiesta. Los que dicen que era algo distinto de un hombre quitan atractivo a Su grandeza, porque entonces las cosas que Él hizo habrían sido más fáciles de llevar a cabo. Quizá ellos no pueden comprender la altura a la que los hombres pueden ascender cuando están inspirados por Dios, el Padre de todos los hombres.

Going into the Temple, Jesus stood up to read, as He had often done in holy days. He read out a passage from the scroll of a prophet to the Jews, called Isiah in the tongue of His fathers and, having done so, returned it to the scrollkeeper and sat down.

Entrando en el Templo, Jesús permaneció levantado para leer, como había hecho muchas veces en los días de descanso. Él leyó un pasaje del royo de un profeta de los Judíos, llamado Isiah en la lengua de sus padres y, al acabarlo, lo devolvió al archivo de los royos y se sentó.

After others had performed their duties, Jesus had a chance to speak. And with all eyes upon Him He did so, and the people were astonished. For he said, “Behold, you are witnessing the fulfillment of the Holy Writ, and the accomplishment of God’s design. I am chosen to be the tongue of the Father, speaking His words to you, His people. I am a Light shining in the midst of darkness. And even as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats, so do I come to show how the good are to be separated from the wicked.”

Después de que otros cumplieran sus obligaciones, Jesús tuvo ocasión de hablar. Jesus spoke with knowledgeable authority, bringing a new message which gladdened the hearts of those who heard Him. The people marveled and whispered among themselves, “Where has He gained all this knowledge? How has He become so learned? Is this not the son of Joseph, the carpenter who is now dead, and of Mary? And do not His sisters live here still? Yet they say He has healed the incurable.” But not all received His words in this manner, and many were offended.

Jesús hablaba con la autoridad del conocimiento, trayendo un nuevo mensaje que alegraba los corazones de los que Le escuchaban. Las gentes se maravillaban y cuchicheaban entre ellos mismos, “ ¿Dónde ha adquirido todo este conocimiento” “Cómo ha aprendido tanto? ¿no es éste el hijo de José, el carpintero, que ya está muerto, y de María? Y no viven Sus hermanas aquí todavía? Sin embargo dicen que Él ha curado a incurables”. Pero no todos recibían Sus palabras de esta forma, y muchos se ofendían

Noticing the murmuring among these, Jesus addressed them, saying, “Do you hold it against Me that I left? If a man has two duties, he must make a choice - not following the inclinations of his heart, but the course indicated by higher decree. No doubt you have heard about the things I have done elsewhere and will say, ‘Let us see You do the same here.’ To this I can answer with sincerity: a prophet is unacceptable in his own neighborhood, and a physician is not called to cure those who know him. When I come in friendship and compassion to those who need My help, they say, ‘Physician, heal Yourself first,’ thinking Me mad. Why now should I be called upon to do things Elijah and Elisha could not do? The only ones they cured were Syrians.”

Sabiendo los rumores entre ellos, Jesús se les dirigió, diciendo, “Me echáis en cara que yo me haya ido? Si un hombre tiene dos tareas, debe hacer una elección -no siguiendo las inclinaciones de su corazón, sino el camino indicado por un mandato más alto. No hay duda de que habéis oído las cosas que he hecho en otras partes y diréis “Vamos a ver si Tú haces lo mismo aquí” Sobre esto puedo contestar con sinceridad: un profeta no es aceptado en su propia vecindad y un médico no es llamado para curar a los que conoce. Cuando vengo con amabilidad y compasión a los que necesitan Mi ayuda, ellos dicen, “Médico, cúrate a Ti mismo primero”, pensando mal de Mi. Por qué ahora podría yo solicitar a Elías hacer algo y Eliseo no lo haría? Los únicos que curaban eran Sirios”.

Jesus did not heal many here, and He said, “I heal in accord with the law and not against it.”

Jesús no curó a muchos aquí y dijo, “Yo curo de acuerdo con la ley y no contra ella”

After hearing what He said in the Temple, many people were vexed with Him and sought to hustle Him out of town. But others said, “Let Him be, for He grew up here and is only the son of a carpenter; therefore He tries to make Himself important. He has been away and seeks to impress us.”

Después de oír lo que dijo en el Templo, muchos estaban enojados con Él e intentaron expulsarle de la ciudad. Pero otros decían, “Dejadlo estar, porque Él creció aquí y es sólo el hijo de un carpintero; Sin embargo intenta hacerse el importante. Él ha estado lejos y pretende impresionarnos.”

Being so poorly received in the town where he had been brought up, Jesus went out around the villages. Choosing twelve envoys from among His disciples, He sent them away in pairs to deal with many things caused by the intrusion of evil.

Siendo tan pobremente recibido en la ciudad en la que había crecido, Jesús fue a las ciudades de los alrededores. Eligiendo doce enviados de entre Sus discípulos, los mandó lejos en parejas para luchar con muchas cosas causadas por la intrusión del mal

He said to them, “Carry a staff, but take no food, no money and no change of clothing. When you are invited to a house, stay there until you leave the village; but never tarry where you are not welcome.”

Él les dijo, “Llevad un báculo, pero no cojáis comida, ni dinero y no cambiéis de vestimenta. Cuando seáis invitados a una casa, permaneced allí hasta que abandonéis el pueblo; pero nunca os detengáis dónde no seáis bienvenidos”

Jesus said, “Many will fail to grasp your meanings, or will interpret your words wrongly. Do not dispute with them, but put things right with patience. Never disregard a questioner or abuse him, lest others think you have no answer. All can only grasp what you say according to their understanding, therefore speak plainly and to their hearts.”

Jesús dijo, “Muchos fallarán al comprender vuestros pensamientos, o interpretarán vuestras palabras de forma equivocada. No disputéis con ellos, pero poned las cosas en claro con paciencia. Nunca desatendáis a alguien que pregunta ni abuséis de él, no sea que los otros piensen que no tenéis contestación. Cada uno puede interpretar lo que decís sólo de acuerdo con su entendimiento, por lo tanto hablad sencillamente y a sus corazones”

Jesus Himself went about proclaiming the advent of the Rule of God, and He also cured many kinds of sickness. Then people began to say, “This Man is great and good even among those dedicated to the service of God.” And many heeded His teaching and led a new life.

Jesús mismo fue a proclamar la llegada del Gobierno de Dios, y también curó muchas clases de enfermedades. Entonces el pueblo empezó a decir, “Este Hombre es grande y bueno incluso entre los dedicados al servicio de Dios.” Y muchos atendieron sus enseñanzas y escogieron una nueva vida.

Now, many people believed there would be two kinds of deliverers, and a man named Joseph Baraban had many followers. Jesus met him at a house in Bethgal and said, “Why do you declare things which stir up the people?” To which the other replied, “What concern is it of Yours?”

Ahora bien, mucha gente creía que podría haber dos tipos de libertadores, y un hombre llamado José Baraban tenía muchos seguidores. Jesús se reunió con él en una casa en Bethgal y dijo, “Por qué declaras cosas que excitan al pueblo?” A lo que el otro respondió, “¿A ti qué te importa?”

Jesus answered him after this manner: “Several men were sitting in a boat, and one began boring a hole beneath his seat. Seeing this, his companions said, ‘What are you doing here?’ He answered, ‘What concern is it of yours what I do beneath my own seat?’ And they replied, ‘Surely it is our affair when what you do will swamp the boat, and we will all be thrown into the water.’”

Jesús entonces le contestó de esta forma, “Muchos hombres estaban sentados en una barca y uno aburrido empezó un agujero bajo su asiento. Al verlo, sus compañeros le dijeron, “Qué estás haciendo aquí”?. El contestó, “Qué os importa lo que yo hago bajo mi propio asiento?” Y los otros le contestaron, “Por supuesto que es asunto nuestro cuando lo que tú haces inundará el bote y nosotros seremos arrojados al agua”.

Jesus moved to another place, and a crowd gathered around Him. And while He was speaking, one of His first followers tried to push through to Him. Now, this man was deformed and ugly, his eyes squinted, and he was ungainly. But he walked in the light of Truth. The crowd jostled him, shouting, “Look at the ugly man; push him back or he will scare the Teacher away.”

Jesús marchó a otro lugar y una multitud le rodeó. Y mientras Él estaba hablando, uno de Sus primeros seguidores intentaba empujar hacia Él. Ahora bien, este hombre era deforme y feo, sus ojos bizqueaban y era desgarbado. Pero él caminaba en el Luz de la Verdad. Then Jesus stepped down from where He stood and, pushing through to the man, put an arm around his shoulders, greeting him affectionately. Jesus said to the people, “Why mock someone in whom the light of goodness shines? What matters the appearance of the body when the spirit within is bright? None among you has a spirit such as this man’s, beautifully glowing with goodness.

Entonces Jesús bajó de dónde estaba y, empujando hacia el hombre, puso un brazo alrededor de sus hombros, saludándolo afectuosamente. Jesús dijo al pueblo, “Por qué ofendéis a uno en quien la luz de la bondad brilla? Qué importa la apariencia del cuerpo cuando el espíritu dentro es brillante? Ninguno de entre vosotros tiene un espíritu igual al de este hombre, que brilla lleno de belleza con bondad.

“This I say to you: the body is of little importance, for it perishes at its hour; but the spirit never dies. Why do you treasure that which you can keep but a short while? For soon it will be cast off like a worn-out tunic. Surely it is better to treasure more lasting things. The shell of a pearl is ugly and rough, but men do not seek it out for itself, wanting only what it contains; and this becomes the cherished treasure of a beautiful woman. Never heed the external ugliness; seek for the beauty within.”

“Esto os digo: el cuerpo es de poca importancia, porque él perece a su hora; pero el espíritu nunca muere. Por qué apreciáis lo que podéis guardar pero poco tiempo? Porque pronto será desechado como una túnica gastada. Seguramente es mejor atesorar cosas más duraderas. La cáscara de una perla es fea y arrugada, pero los hombres no la buscan por sí misma, esperando sólo lo que contiene; y se convierte en el agradable tesoro de una mujer bella. No atendáis nunca la fealdad externa; buscad la belleza en el interior”

In the crowd there was a man who employed many others, and he said, “Sire, I am so stirred up by Your words that I will give up everything I have and follow You.”

Entre la multitud había un hombre que empleaba a muchos otros, y dijo, “Señor, estoy tan emocionado por Tus palabras que daré todo lo que tengo y Te seguiré”

Jesus said, “How many look to you for food and employment?” The man replied, “My children are numerous, and I have many servants, and there is my father who is old.”

Jesús contestó, “Cuántos dependen de ti para comer y trabajar”. El hombre contestó, “Mis hijos son numerosos y tengo muchos servidores y está mi padre que es viejo”.

Jesus said, “The lives of no two men are alike, and all require the labors of many to support them. Even the greatest teachings cannot satisfy empty stomachs. Therefore, return to the place of your appointed labors and remain constant in your responsibilities. Give all you make over your modest requirements to God, and study the Holy Books daily.”

Jesús dijo, “ La vida de dos hombres no es nunca igual, y todos requieren el trabajo de muchos que dependen de ellos. Ni las mejores enseñanzas pueden satisfacer un estómago vacío. Por lo tanto, vuelve al lugar del trabajo que te corresponde y permanece constante en tus responsabilidades. Ofrece todo lo que haces más allá de tu modesta necesidad a Dios, y estudia todos los días Los Libros Santos”.

Jesus said, “A man without the light places his faith in gold, burying it in the ground so it will support him in adversity. Yet what benefit does it bestow if he never needs it? He worries continually and must be constantly on guard, lest he be robbed. And when he dies, his inheritors spend it. Yet by charitable deeds and self-restraint, a greater treasure which cannot be taken by robbers or dissipated by others can be laid up openly and without fear.”

Jesús dijo, “Un hombre sin luces coloca su fe en el oro, sepultándolo en la tierra de forma que le ayudará en la adversidad. Pero qué beneficio le da si nunca lo necesita? Él se preocupa continuamente y debe estar constantemente en guardia, no sea que se lo roben. Y cuando muere, sus herederos lo gastan. Pero por los actos caritativos y el autocontrol, el mayor tesoro que no puede ser robado o malgastado por otros, puede descansar tranquilamente y sin miedo”

Someone in the crowd said, “Great Teacher, to some You say, ‘Give up all,’ while others You tell to continue in their ways. I have many responsibilities and a moderate surplus over my requirements. What should I do?”

Alguno entre la multitud dijo, “Gran Maestro, a algunos les dices “entrégalo todo” mientras a otros les animas a continuar en su camino. Yo tengo muchas responsabilidades y un moderado excedente sobre mis necesidades. Qué debería hacer?

Jesus said, “Do what is right and just. Study the Books of Wisdom, and live according to their teachings. Exploit no one, and work for the Rule of God.”

Jesús dijo, “Haz lo que es bueno y justo. Estudia los Libros de Sabiduría y vive de acuerdo con sus enseñanzas. No explotes a nadie y trabaja para el Gobierno de Dios”

A man said to Jesus, “Sire, I know the problems of the rich, for I have sons and many friends. But how can I know whether they love me or my wealth?”

Jesus said, “A rich man owned a large warehouse, but one night this burned down, consuming all his wealth. And though he had given other warehouses to each of his two sons, when he lost his own they would not help him. While poor, he met a beggar boy whom he adopted to fill the empty places in his heart.

Un hombre dijo a Jesús, “Señor, conozco los problemas del rico, porque tengo hijos y muchos amigos. Pero cómo puedo saber si me quieren a mí a mis riquezas”

Jesús dijo, “ Un hombre rico poseía un gran almacén, pero una noche éste se incendió, consumiendo todas sus riquezas. Y aunque él había dado otro almacén a cada uno de sus hijos, cuando él perdió el suyo ellos no quisieron ayudarle. Cuando ya fue pobre, encontró a un pequeño mendigo al que adoptó para llenar el lugar vacío en su corazón.

And, going to a distant city, by hard work, he established another warehouse, becoming rich again. When the adopted boy grew up, the man gave him a warehouse, but one much smaller than those he had previously given to his sons.

Y, llegando a una ciudad lejana, con gran trabajo, él consiguió establecer otro almacén, haciéndose rico de nuevo. Cuando el niño adoptado creció, el hombre le dio un almacén, pero mucho más pequeño que los que había dado previamente a sus hijos.

The two sons heard about their father’s new wealth and sent word that they wanted to combine their warehouses with his, so that by trading together they could all get richer. The man then sent messengers to all three of those he had helped, saying his business had declined, and he was in the hands of moneylenders and required a hundred pieces of gold to continue. The two sons returned excuses, saying they could not help; but the adopted son sent two hundred pieces of gold, saying he had pledged himself to obtain it. Thus the man found out who loved him and left all his estate to the one he had adopted.”

Los dos hijos oyeron acerca de la nueva riqueza del padre y mandaron recado de que esperaban unir sus almacenes con el suyo, de forma que al comerciar juntos podrían ser todos más ricos. El hombre envió mensajeros a los tres a los que había ayudado, diciendo que su negocio había fracasado y estaba en manos de prestamistas y necesitaba cien piezas de oro para continuar. Los dos hijos pusieron excusas, diciendo que ellos no podían ayudar; pero el hijo adoptivo envió doscientas piezas de oro, diciendo que se había endeudado a sí mismo para obtenerlas. Así el hombre supo quién le quería y dejó todas sus posesiones al que había adoptado.

Speaking to the people about Him, Jesus said, “So long as the great sun never shone upon Earth, there was darkness; and had it not come to shine, there would be darkness still. Without the sun, men would not have known day from night; but when it came, both were made distinguishable. These times are a night of ignorance, wherein wrongdoing and bewilderment prevail; but a light has come to dispel the darkness and make right distinguishable from wrong.”

Hablando al pueblo de Sí mismo, Jesús dijo, “Hace mucho tiempo como el gran sol nunca alumbraba sobre la Tierra, había oscuridad; y si no hubiera venido a alumbrar, habría oscuridad todavía. Sin el sol, los hombres no habrían distinguido el día de la noche; pero cuando llegó, ambos se hicieron visibles. Aquellos tiempos eran una noche de ignorancia, en la que prevalecían la maldad y el desconcierto; pero una luz llegó a disipar la oscuridad y hacer el bien distinguible del mal”

After these things had been done and said, it was the time of a Jewish festival, and Jesus returned to where there was a place of assembly. On the way, He passed through the market where sheep were sold, beside which was a salt pool having a covered entrance to shelter the sick and maimed.

Después de que estas cosas habían sido hechas y dichas, llegó el tiempo del festival de los Judíos, y Jesús volvió donde estaba el lugar de la reunión. En el camino, pasó por el mercado dónde se vendían, junto al que había un embalse medicinal que tenía una entrada cubierta para proteger a los enfermos y tullidos

A man was lying nearby, and Jesus said to him, “How long have you been here?” The man replied, “I have been here a long time, having no one to put me into the water at the proper times.” Jesus took pity on the man and, taking him by the hand, raised him up, saying, “You are cured; arise, take your bed and depart.”

This happened on the Sabbath, and when some pious Jews saw the man carrying a burden, they rebuked him. But he answered, “The Healer Who came and cured me said I should take up my bed, so where am I in the wrong?”

Un hombre yacía cerca y Jesús le dijo, “Cuánto tiempo llevas aquí?. El hombre respondió, “Llevo aquí mucho tiempo, no tengo a nadie que me empuje al agua en el momento adecuado”, Jesús tuvo piedad del hombre y, cogiéndole de la mano, le levantó, diciendo, “Tú estás curado; levanta, coge tu camilla y vete”.

Esto ocurrió en Sábado, y cuando algunos Judíos piadosos vieron al hombre llevando la carga, le reprendieron. Pero él contestó, “El Sanador Que vino y me curó me dijo que cogiera mi camilla, así que dónde está mi pecado?”

The pious Jews enquired regarding the Healer, but the man said he did not know Him, having never seen Him before. Later, when the man who had been cured saw Jesus outside the place of assembly, he learned His name and told the Jews.

Los piadosos Judíos preguntaron buscando al Sanador, pero el hombre dijo que no Le conocía, ni Le había visto antes. Más tarde, cuando el hombre que había sido curado vio a Jesús fuera del lugar de reunión, se enteró de su hombre y se lo dijo a los Judíos.

Before this, the pious ones who were separated out from the people had ignored Jesus, but now, because He did such things on the Sabbath, they turned against Him. For Jesus said, “If My Father does not rest, why should I?”

Antes de esto, los Judíos piadosos que estaban separados de la gente habían ignorado a Jesús, pero ahora, porque Él hacía tales cosas en Sábado, se volvieron contra Él. Porque Jesús dijo, “Si Mi Padre no para, porqué yo debería?”.

They thought He claimed closer kinship with God than ordinary men, but He meant to show that all men are brothers.

Ellos pensaban que Él proclamaba un parentesco con Dios más cercano que los hombres ordinarios, pero Él se proponía enseñar que todos los hombres eran hermanos.

The next day, when Jesus commenced speaking to the people, many sought to do Him harm. And He said, “You have the teachings of the law and the prophets. Why do you seek to do Me harm?” Then they shouted back at Him, “Because You are possessed by demons. You tell us we are wrong, but we are content with our ways. Leave us to go our way, and You go Yours.”

Al día siguiente, cuando Jesús empezó a hablar al pueblo, muchos intentaron hacerle daño. Y Él dijo, “Vosotros tenéis las enseñanzas de la ley y los profetas. Por qué queréis hacerme daño?”. Entonces ellos Le gritaron, “Porque estás poseído por demonios. Tú nos dices que estamos equivocados, pero nosotros estamos contentos con nuestra vida. Déjanos ir por nuestro camino y Tú sigue el Tuyo”

After this, Jesus went away, because of the hostility towards Him. But when it came close to harvesting time, His brothers sent a messenger, saying, “Come back now. The people are busy at work. Let your followers here see for themselves the things You do, for if Your message is important, the bearer should not remain hidden.”

Después de esto, Jesús se fue, a causa de la hostilidad hacia Él. Pero cuando se acercó el tiempo de la cosecha, Sus hermanos le mandaron un mensaje, diciendo, “Vuelve. La gente está cansada de trabajar. Deja a tus seguidores de aquí ver por sí mismo las cosas que Tú haces, porque si Tu mensaje es importante, el portador no debería permanecer escondido”

On His way back, Jesus and the disciples with Him passed through Samaria, where there was a place called Jacob’s well, five furlongs from Sichem. The sun being at its height, they decided to rest there. After refreshing themselves, the disciples went into the town to buy food, leaving Jesus reclining not far from the well.

Now, while Jesus rested there, a Samaritan woman came to draw water. And Jesus, not having a vessel, asked her for a drink. This surprised the woman, for the Jews regarded anything handled by the Samaritans as being defiled. She said, “How can You ask this of me?”

En Su camino de vuelta, Jesús y Sus discípulos pasaron por Samaria, dónde había un lugar llamado el pozo de Jacob, a cinco estadios de Sichem. Como el sol estaba en su zénit, decidieron descansar allí. Después de refrescarse a sí mismos, los discípulos fueron al pueblo a comprar comida, dejando a Jesús reclinado no lejos del pozo.

Entonces, mientras Jesús descansaba allí, una mujer Samaritana llegó a sacar agua. Y Jesús, como no tenía recipiente, le pidió un sorbo. Esto sorprendió a la mujer, porque los Judíos rechazaban cualquier cosa tocada por los Samaritanos porque estaba sucia. Ella dijo, “Cómo me pides esto?”.

Jesus replied, “If you knew what God gives through Me, you would have requested a draft from the waters of Life.”

Jesús contestó, “Si tú supieras lo que Dios da a través de Mí, tú podrías solicitar una muestra de las aguas de la Vida”

The woman said, “What is this water of Life? Surely it cannot bestow greater benefit than this well, the gift of our forefather, which provided water for him, his household and his flocks.”

La mujer dijo, “Qué es el agua de la Vida?Seguramente no puede proporcionar mayor beneficio que este pozo, regalo de nuestros antepasados, que provee agua para ellos, sus familias y sus ganados”

Jesus said, “This water, originating on Earth, can satisfy only body; and the drinker will thirst again. But the water I can provide, springing from an eternal Source, satisfies any who drink, so they need never thirst again for things not of this world, and it grants everlasting life in glory.”

Jesús dijo, “Este agua, que se origina en la Tierra, sólo puede satisfacer al cuerpo; y el bebedor tendrá sed de nuevo. Pero el agua que yo puedo dar, surgiendo de una Fuente eterna, satisface a cualquiera que beba, de forma que no necesitan beber de nuevo porque no es de este mundo y garantiza una vida eterna en la gloria”

The woman said to Jesus, “Let me have this water You talk about, so I am freed from the necessity for drawing water.”

La mujer dijo a Jesús, “Déjame probar ese agua del que Tú hablas, así yo me libraré de la necesidad de sacar agua”

Jesus said, “It would be best if you went and brought your husband, for two may understand better than one.”

Jesús dijo, “Sería mejor si tú fueras y trajeras a tu esposo, porque dos pueden comprender mejor que uno”-

She answered, “But I have no husband.” Jesus said, “In this you have at any rate spoken true, for though married five times, you now live with one who is not your husband.”

Ella contestó, “Pero yo no tengo esposo.” Jesús dijo,”En esto de alguna manera has dicho la verdad, porque a pesar de casarte cinco veces, ahora vives con uno que no es tu marido”

The Samaritan woman said to Jesus, “Sire, I can see You are One of those special people who know all things. Now tell me, is it true what Your people tell us, that we should worship in the Temple at Jerusalem to reach the ear of God, for He is only there and not on Mount Gerasim?”

La mujer Samaritana dijo a Jesús, “Señor, puedo ver que Tú eres Una de esas personas especiales que lo saben todo. Ahora dime, es verdad lo que Tu pueblo nos dice, que seamos fieles en el Templo de Jerusalén para alcanzar la atención de Dios, porque Él sólo está allí y no en el Monte Gerasim?”

Jesus told her, “Be assured, the time is coming when the place of worship is unimportant. For though your people worship without understanding the nature of worship, while the Jews worship with this knowledge, neither know the true nature of worship. The time is coming when all who understand the nature of worship will do so in spirit and in the light of Truth.

Jesús le dijo, “Puedes estar segura de que llegará un tiempo en el que el lugar de culto sea indiferente. Porque aunque tu pueblo venera sin comprender la naturaleza del culto, mientras los Judíos veneran con este conocimiento, tampoco conocen la verdadera naturaleza del culto. Llegará un tiempo en el que todo el que comprenda la naturaleza del culto lo realizará así en el espíritu y en la luz de la Verdad.

“For God is the greatest of spirits, and His worshippers must therefore bring something of the spirit. This - and labor in His service - is the only acceptable kind of worship. The smoke of flesh and fowl are not acceptable offerings.”

“Porque Dios es el mayor de los espíritus, y sus fieles deben por lo tanto poseer algo del espíritu. Esta -y el trabajo a Su servicio- es la única clase aceptable de culto. El humo de la carne y el pollo no son ofrendas aceptables”

The woman heard without understanding, but one with Jesus stored these things in his heart. The woman said, “Some day an Enlightener will come and explain these things to us.” Jesus replied, “My words may have come from the Enlightener Himself.”

La mujer escuchaba sin comprender, pero alguien que estaba con Jesús guardaba estas cosas en su corazón. La mujer dijo, “Algún día un Iluminador vendrá y nos explicará estas cosas”. Jesús contestó, “Mis palabras pueden haber venido del Mismo Iluminador”

The woman said, “I must go, for You frighten me.” Just as she was preparing to go, the disciples returned and were surprised to find Jesus had been talking to a Samaritan woman in this manner, but they said nothing. Leaving her pitcher, the woman hastened away to spread word around that there was a Man out at Jacob’s well Who could read the past and might be the Enlightener, for the Samaritans did not await the Deliverer as did the Jews.

La mujer dijo, “Debo irme, porque Tú me asustas”. Justo cuando ella se preparaba para irse, los discípulos volvieron y se sorprendieron de encontrar que Jesús había estado hablando con una mujer Samaritana de esta forma, pero no dijeron nada. Dejando su cántaro, la mujer se apresuró a salir para correr la voz de que había un Hombre junto al pozo de Jacob Que podía leer el pasado y podría ser el Iluminador, porque los Samaritanos no esperaban un Libertador como los Judíos.

When the woman had gone, the disciples showed the things they had brought to Jesus. But He was disinclined to eat, saying to them, “Doing the will of God sustains Me, and the inflowing power of His Spirit quenches My thirst.”

Cuando la mujer se fue, los discípulos enseñaron lo que habían comprado a Jesús, Pero Él no estaba dispuesto a comer, diciéndoles, “El hacer la voluntad de Dios me alimenta y la influencia del poder de su espíritu me calma la sed”

One of the disciples said, “It is well to eat now, for the harvest is ripening over there, and the harvesters need strength.”

Uno de los discípulos dijo, “Está bien comer ahora, porque la cosecha está encima y los cosechadores necesitan fuerza”

Jesus said, “The reapers cannot expect their pay until the crop is gathered into the storehouse. Let us wait to measure the fruits of our labor before celebrating. Is it not written, ‘Where one man sows, another reaps’? You will be reapers in fields sown by others. Many have toiled in the preparation of the ground and have sown good seed. You must be no less diligent in reaping the harvest, gathering it in carefully so not a grain is lost.”

Jesús dijo, “Los segadores no pueden esperar sus pagas hasta que el maíz esté guardado en el almacén. Esperemos para medir los frutos de nuestro trabajo antes de celebrarlo. Acaso no está escrito “donde un hombre siembra, otro lo siega? Vosotros seréis segadores en campos sembrados por otros Muchos tienen cuidado en la preparación de la tierra y han sembrado buenas semillas. Vosotros no debéis ser menos diligentes en segar la cosecha, juntándola con mucho cuidado para que no se pierda ningún grano”

The one who had remained with Jesus said, “Sire, I am puzzled. This woman had many husbands; tell us which one will be her husband in Heaven.”

El que había permanecido con Jesús dijo, “Señor, estoy confundido. Esa mujer había tenido muchos maridos; dinos cuál de ellos será su marido en los Cielos”

Jesus said, “In Heaven there is neither marriage nor giving in marriage, for there the promises of marriage are fulfilled. To one she must incline more than towards the others; and if he inclines likewise, there is union of the spirit. But unions of the spirit may be either weak or strong.”

Jesús dijo, “En los Cielos no hay ni matrimonio ni entrega en matrimonio, porque allí las promesas de matrimonio se ejecutan. Ella debe inclinarse por uno más que por otro; y si él tiene la misma inclinación, hay una unión de espíritus. Pero las uniones del espíritu no deben ser ni débiles ni fuertes. “

Another disciple said, “What of he who is not her husband?”

Otro discípulo dijo, “Y qué pasa con el que no es su marido?”

Jesus answered him, “Marriage is not of the flesh, nor made by the words of men. It is of the spirit, and they who are joined in spirit and flesh in the sight of God let no man seek to lightly put apart. A marriage wholly of the flesh is fornication, though it be blessed by many priests.

Jesús le contestó, “El matrimonio no es de la carne, ni realizado por las palabras de los hombres. Es del espíritu, y los que están unidos por el espíritu y la carne a los ojos de Dios ningún hombre pretende separarlos frívolamente. Un matrimonio enteramente por la carne es fornicación, aunque sea bendecido por muchos sacerdotes.

“Yet marriage is the measure of value. A thing possessed by many is of little consequence. The worth of a coin lacking inscription is unestablished, and the possessor carries it without faith, doubting its ability to buy bread. A woman may be reserved for marriage, or give herself freely for love. She knows her own worth best. But if she gives herself to several, then it is not love, but fornication.

El matrimonio es incluso la medida de valor. Una cosa poseída por muchos es de poca consideración. El valor de una moneda que carece de inscripción no está establecido y el poseedor la lleva sin fe, dudando de su posibilidad de comprar pan. Una mujer debe ser reservada para el matrimonio o entregarse ella misma libremente al amor. Ella sabe mejor su propio valor. Pero si se entrega a muchos, entonces eso no es amor, sino fornicación

“A union is blessed before a priest and sanctified in the eyes of the people. But I tell you, unless the bond is forged on the anvil of adversity and wrought under the hammers of stress and struggle, it is a thing of little spiritual substance.

Una unión es bendecida ante un sacerdote y santificada a los ojos del pueblo. Pero yo os digo, a menos que el lazo se forje en el yunque de la adversidad y se trabaje bajo los golpes del cansancio y el esfuerzo, es algo de pequeña sustancia espiritual.

“Love is not like the thistle seed, blown this way or that according to the prevailing winds of desire and inclination. It is not the offspring of flesh, but the sunchild of the spirit. It can be proven and established only under difficulties and tribulations, and it is because of the known frailties of men under trial and test that marriage has been ordained to enshrine it.”

“El amor no es como la semilla de un cardo, doblado hacia este lado o aquel de acuerdo a con el soplo de los vientos del deseo e inclinación. No es el resultado de la carne, sino el resurgir del espíritu. Sólo puede ser probado y estable ido bajo las dificultades y tribulaciones, y es a causa del conocimiento de las debilidades de los hombres en las pruebas y problemas por lo que el matrimonio ha sido instituído para contenerlo.”

Now, after these things were said, many Samaritans came and heard the words of Jesus and invited Him to stay among them. And He remained three days.

Entonces, después de que fueron dichas estas cosas, muchos Samaritanos vinieron y escucharon las palabras de Jesús y le invitaron a permanecer entre ellos. Y Él se quedó tres días.
